The views of the war supporters as well as protesters’ views have appeared in articles in conservative news:
“’We [anti-globalization, anti-war, and Palestinian solidarity protesters] are all concerned about U.S. military and economic policies that are undermining freedom and justice,’ proclaimed Terra Lawson-Reamer, a spokeswoman for the coalition that will stage a series of teach-ins, protests and marches.” “Activists like Al Sharpton will be on hand to protest against the PATRIOT Act and the perceived loss of civil liberties due to the war on terror, said A20 spokesman Roxanne Lawson.” April 20, 2002
“In fairness, many of the protesters were from Arab American and human rights organizations. And based on my short conversations with them, many appeared genuinely knowledgeable about Mideast affairs.” April 23, 2002 However, along with the lack of reporting on the number of protesters and the tone of the New Republic headline suggesting bias against the anti-war movement, other content from articles and commentaries reveal an open and strong animosity towards the anti-war movement. The following articles, the first on the September 29th protest and the second and third on the April 20th protest, openly attack and insult the anti-war protesters. Michael Kelly portrays anti-war protesters as having no guiding purpose, instead as simply an outlet for “unhappy people”.
“It had been intended as just another in the series of protests against globalism that have been serving as a sort of kvetch basin for all sorts of unhappy people who like to yell about the awfulness of “Amerika” or international corporations or rich people or people who drive large cars or drug companies that test their products on bunny rabbits or life its own unfair self.” October 3, 2001
“Joining a hodgepodge of interest groups – including those representing anti-globalization and Palestinian solidarity – a coalition of anti-war groups plan to converge on Washington in a show of activist angst this weekend.” “But some expect the protests to be more about anti-Americanism than whether Mexican workers are getting a fair shake from corporate employers.” April 20, 2002
“It seems anti-globalization activists have now folded Palestinian solidarity into the hodgepodge of causes they call their own. The result has been as incoherent as it sounds, with ignorance undermining any legitimate grievances.” “But it quickly became apparent that the Mideast was not the only thing on these people’s minds. For many, it was just another cause to squeeze into their anti-Western protest rubric.” April 23, 2002
